Chinese Lunar New Year in Singapore

Greetings! This is Takahashi from Hokkaido Government Representative Office in Singapore.

16th February was a national holiday for Chinese Lunar New Year in Singapore. Since 2018 is the year of the dog, there are a lot of monuments of dogs around Singapore.

The barking sound of dogs “wang” has the same sound as a Chinese character “旺” which means prosperity and flourishing. We can find this Chinese character with pictures of dogs on many gift packages.

Last year was the year of the rooster and its huge monument was displayed in the center of Chinatown, even after Chinese Lunar New Year ended. I hope this year’s monument will be displayed for a while and many people can see it.

By the way, I was surprised by the honesty of a restaurant for telling us the reason why they take Chinese New Year surcharges…
