Greetings, this is Nazrul from the Hokkaido Government Representative Office.
The city of Mombetsu lies in the northeastern region of Hokkaido and faces the Sea of Okhotsk, and visitors flock to the city during winter in January and February to witness drift ice that completely covers the ocean in pure white. They can do so on board the Garinko-go II, an ice-breaking cruise ship that smashes the drift ice as it sails across the water.
When spring comes, the drift ice disappears and the season of delicious crabs and scallops arrives, where people can come and enjoy Hokkaido’s best seafood.
Also, Mombetsu is home to the Okhotsk Tokkari Center, the only center where earless seals are being reared and taken care of in Japan. And next to it is the AZARASHI Sea Paradise, where visitors can come in contact with the lovable animals, and the Okhotsk Tower, where visitors can have a full view of the sea under water.
